                        The Madagascar Water Project

  Project Description

The Madagascar Water for Everyone Project is designed to achieve the goals of

  1. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.1:  By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
  2. Plan Emergence Madagascar Priorite 29 – Garantir l’acces universal a l’eau potable

The Project was conceived by the international NGO Water Charity, and they have partnered with the Madagascar Water Project to execute the Project in Madagascar.  They are both registered non-profit public charities with world-wide experience as well as experience specific to Madagascar.  Water Charity brings its experience in The Gambia and Liberia where Water for Everyone Projects have already been completed.

The Project combines the latest technology in satellite mapping with an extensive ground-based data collection effort.  Water Charity will integrate population, infrastructure, health, and other data collected on the ground by the Madagascar Water Project into their Geographic Information System (GIS) map-based platform.  This will make it possible to

  1. identify and quantify gaps in water infrastructure;
  2. design specific and targeted projects to improve clean water access
  3. put them in a format that can be presented to potential sponsors and operators and 4) track their impact over time.

The Project requires a considerable amount of data collection.  Some is available from existing sources and data bases, both within government and non-governmental organizations.  The Project will conduct an inventory and document existing water infrastructure, assess its functionality and adequacy to the populations served and identify and document under-served populations where they exist.  Population data, water-related health data, agricultural and irrigation data, and water infrastructure and water quality data will be collected from local officials when available.  Well location data will be recorded using GPS enabled devices.

Projects will include new drill wells, repair of existing wells and the repairs, maintenance, or upgrades of larger infrastructure.  Some areas will be prioritized based on their specific needs.  It will be funded through the participating NGO's.

The Water for Everyone - Madagascar Project began in two very different areas of Madagascar:

The Region of Antsinanana District of Marolambo.  It's an isolated area in the eastern highlands that has not benefitted from most government or NGO sponsored water development programs.  The first reconnaissance trip found 30,000 people without access to clean water.   Near complete inaccessibility by road has kept drilling rigs out of the area.  The few water systems that exist are twenty-year-old dammed reservoir systems that have fallen into extreme disrepair.

The Region of Anosy District of Betroka.  This area is located in southern Madagascar, which has suffered from a 10-year drought.  Access to water, any water, is limited.  This includes water for agricultureal use so malnutrition s widespread.  Although very isolated and somewhat dangerous, the region has benefitted from past water well drilling programs.  The problem and the solution lie in the fact that 95% of these well are now broken and many have been completely stripped.  All of the wells, numbering over 1000, have casing and many can be brought back to production with the installation of a new pump.

Early learnings indicate there are a near infinite number of clean water development opportunities in Madagascar.  The government of Madagascar doesn't even have enough money to build roads to either of these areas, so help in the foreseeable future will have to come from the private sector, charities and individuals like yourselves.

Key Players

Water Charity and the Madagascar Water Project share a common mission: to provide clean water to as many people as possible through near-term, high impact, cost effective and achievable projects, using local labor and resources.  They have already partnered on two Madagascar water well drilling programs.  They bring a very complementary skill set to the partnership, making it well-qualified for the work required to achieve the goals of the Project.

Water Charity is a registered non-profit public charity in the State of California, USA. During their 15 years, they have supported or implemented nearly 9000 projects in 81 countries, including 31 projects in Madagascar, providing water to about 9 million people.    https://www.watercharity.com

The Madagascar Water Project is a registered non-profit public charity in the State of Alabama, USA.  Since 2015, they have drilled 157 water wells along the east coast of Madagascar, providing clean water to an estimated 80,000 people.   http://www.themadagascarwaterproject.orgType your paragraph here.
