Project Name: Marolambo Water Rehabilitation Project
Program Location: Marolambo: Marolambo is a large village in the eastern highlands, located in the southern part of the Region of Antsinanana. It houses the District and Commune offices, has a population of 7763 and consists of three Fokontany: Antanambao, Vohidiavolana, and Vohitromby-II. It is extremely remote and has been passed over by every aide program since time beginning.
Problem Addressed: The Marolambo municipal water system was built 20 years ago. It is a surface water system collecting water from a dammed stream, piping it 2.3 kilometers to the village and delivering it to 48 water stations throughout the village. The water system is no longer functional. The upstream facilities are filled with mud, only fifteen water stations work, and the pipeline is leaking profusely, depleting the water flow and shutting down the system.
Many villagers use contaminated water from urban streams and ponds. Water-borne disease is widespread with an average of 245 cases of diarrhea reported annually. The Mayor of the Commune recognizes the problem, believes it will only get worse and asked for the MWP’s help in a letter dated May 17, 2023.
Project Objectives: The Marolambo Water Rehabilitation Project will restore water service to the village. Having an abundant and easily accessible supply of clean water, it is believed the incidence of water borne disease will decrease and higher levels of sanitation and personal hygiene standards will be achieved. This will contribute to a healthier, more productive population, a better quality of life for all, and vulnerable populations will be better protected from serious illness.
Project Plans: The upstream facilities consisting of the dam, reservoir, filter tanks and storage tanks will be rebuilt to their original or better condition. The entire pipeline and distribution system will be replaced. More than 3.2 kilometers of PVC pipeline will be laid, and forty-seven water stations will be built.
The project will begin in September and take approximately 45 days to complete. The project will require 3.7 man-years of paid local labor and will contribute an estimated $7.6k USD to the local economy in wages and locally obtained goods and services. Total project costs are estimated to be $32k USD distributed as follows:
Materials: $17.8k Wages & Salaries: $7.6k Logistics: $6.6k.
